Today at the AHATS WOA, I Saw Babies.

Baby Loons-44901.jpg

Today at the Arden Hills Army Training Site Wildlife Observation Area, I saw lots of babies.  The trumpeter swan pair have 5 cygnets.  The common loon pair have two young.  And a whole bunch of wood ducklings were around minus one.

I witnessed an interesting behavior from one of the swans, something I've never seen.  The swan attacked a momma wood duck.  She disparately tried to distract it from one of the ducklings but the swan was determined.  The duckling would submerge for a few seconds but when it popped up the swan would lunge for it.  After a few minutes of this comical chase, the swan succeeded. It held the duckling under water and then shook it around like a dog playing with a chew toy.  It was an interesting site to behold.  Wish I would've had video and/or a 10,000mm lens.

Bald Eagle_49391.jpg

Today a young bald eagle flew over my head at the Arden Hills Army Training Site Wildlife Observation Area. I also saw: a pileated woodpecker, an eastern bluebird, some chickadees, heard some song sparrows, saw my first of the year yellow-rumped warbler, two common loons, one trumpeter swan, four goldfinches, four blue jays, a crow and lots of red-winged blackbirds.

Today at the AHATS WOA, I Saw a Swan Fight

Swan Fight.jpg

Tonight I saw a swan fight at the Arden Hills Army Training Site Wildlife Observation Area. They chased each other around the lake and one managed to pull some feather out. It was dark and high ISO but I got the action.

Also saw: two osprey gathering sticks from a nearby tree, tree sparrow mating, a pair of eastern blue birds, four talkative blue jays and some ducks and Canada geese.

Toady at the AHATS WOA, I Saw Clouds and Birds

Trees and Clouds_47513.jpg

Today at the AHATS Wildlife Observation Area, I saw clouds and a plane. Actually, I saw 6 or 8 airplanes. I also saw a pair of bluebirds, about 8 tree swallows, 1 Cooper's hawk, 1 turkey vulture, 1 pileated woodpecker, 1 song sparrow and a bunch of ducks and Canada geese and Red-winged blackbirds.

The first for the day was seeing a downy woodpecker inside one of the bluebird cans.

Today at the AHATS WOA, I Saw a Bald Eagle

Bald Eagle_46315.jpg

Today at the Arden Hills Army Training Site Wildlife Observation Area, I saw a bald eagle.  Well, I may have seen two or this one twice.  I heard my first of the year song sparrow but didn't see it.  I also saw Mr. and Mrs. Northern Harrier.  Nothing quiets the red-winged blackbirds as quickly as a harrier fly-over.  Saw a Mr. Cardinal signing, some chickadees, goldfinches and lots of Canada geese and unidentified ducks on lake Marsden.

Today at the AHATS WOA, I Saw Chickadees

Chickadee_43539.jpg

Today at the Arden Hills Army Training Site Wildlife Observation Area, I saw black-capped chickadees. I put some seed out on the bridge and a lone chickadee came by to enjoy my generosity.  I also saw some crows, Canada geese, mallards and a goldfinch.  Heard some downey/hairy woodpeckers.

Here's a video of it thanking me:

Today at the AHATS WOA, I Saw Eagles and a Coyote

Bald Eagle_43141.jpg

Today at the Arden Hills Army Training Site Wildlife Observation Area, I saw a bald eagle. Within just a few minutes of getting setup this young bald eagle flew over head.

Shortly after that, I saw a coyote walking on the ice.

And then another eagle landed on a dirt pile on the ice:

I also saw a half a dozen crows, about 20 mallards flying over, a downy/hairy woodpecker and some chickadees.

Saw a coyote in the same spot where I've seen it in the past near the TCAAP Wildlife Viewing Area. So far, I haven't been able to catch it with the camera while it's standing still. As soon as I turn the truck off, it runs.

Previously Nowhere Near the TCAAP WVA, I Saw a Ruddy Turnstone

I spent most of last week in the Jacksonville Beach Florida area. I got out for one sunrise on the beach (my first time on an ocean beach). It was great fun. I got low and waited while these ruddy turnstones ran around me looking for crabs or whatever they were eating.

Here is a slide show of the whole trip.

Today Near the TCAAP WVA, I Saw A Beaver Eating

I staked out the beaver lodge in the morning and the afternoon. At the end of the day, one of the beavers put on a show by eating a tree branch in good view of my camera.  Below is an HD video...

Today Near the TCAAP WVA, I Saw a Kestrel on a Wire

I got spend some time in the AHATS tonight and it was a big night of firsts for me. Although the clouds didn't sync with the photo ops, I had lots of fun.

The bird on the right is an American Kestrel. I saw a pair of males hunting from the power polls and lines. They are usually very skittish and don't let even a car pull up very close. This one was true to form but when I got out of the truck, it came back with what looked like a skink or snake. The light was awful but I had to document the birds. I'll be posting the sighting on The Raptor Center's website because they track these birds in particular.

The most exciting part of the evening was seeing two beavers.  I was told they were around and saw their lodge up close this winter.  The sun was long gone behind the hills so this shot is very noisy and icky.  I saw five swans on the lake tonight.  These two didn't care for the beaver.  At one point, the beaver slapped it's tail and dove under one of the floating bogs.

I also saw two muskrats grooming each other.  Didn't get a decent shot though but it was fun seeing them.

I accidentally surprised a red-tailed hawk so it let out the classic scream at me as it flew away.  I've heard it countless times in movies and on TV (mostly associated with the wrong bird...dumb Hollywood) but there's nothing like hearing it person knowing it's directed at you.

These two deer were in a group of three...also very dark and high ISO but I like the pose and composition.  I got a decent photo of a male eastern bluebird.  And got a shot of my nemesis coming in for a landing in nice light.

Lastly, the sun looked really amazing just before it set.

Today Near the TCAAP WVA, I Saw Lots of Stuff

I spent a good part of the weekend in the Arden Hills Army Training Site.  Today, I got to see 10 white-tailed deer navigate the cliff surrounding the gravel pit like they were mountain goats.  I also saw: 1000s of ducks; about 40 robins; a bald eagle; a pair of red-tailed hawks; some woodpeckers; a dead coyote and heard a pileated woodpecker.

Previously at the TCAAP WVA, I Saw a Deer Up Close and Personal

I'm really getting anxious to get out to the TCAAP Wildlife Viewing Area. It's still dark out when I get home from work so I have to wait until the weekends. Last Saturday, it was -20F windchill and I wasn't motivated to get out there. Sunday is was cloudy and misty rain all day.

I saw this buck back in July 2010. It let me walk up within just a few yards. In fact, I had to back up because it came close to me in order to fit it in the frame.

I think this is a different eagle than the one I blogged about earlier.  There are two that hang out in the Arden Hills Army Training Site near the TCAAP Wildlife Viewing Area.
